Asian Lanternfly

How to Identify the Asian Lanternfly
Lanternfly

The Asian planthopper known as the spotted lanternfly is an invasive species that could be very devastating to some New Jersey crops and hardwood trees. The egg masses survive winter and hatch into nymphs in the spring. We need to help to limit the number of lanternflies in the county by scraping the egg masses from trees in our parks an in your neighborhoods before they hatch in May.

Join Naturalist Kate throughout various parks to help scrape spotted lanternfly egg masses! Please bring along a scraping card if you have one, or a plastic gift card/paint scraping tool can work as well. There will be a few to hand out before the beginning of the program if needed. Specific trail sections will be assigned upon checking in. This program is for ages 10 and up, and you can stay for as long as you would like. Learn more about how egg mass scraping is done in this video.
