Do I Need a Permit?

Common Projects that Require Permits:

  • Construction of a new dwelling
  • Decks
  • Demolition of an structure or interior demolition prior to any construction work
  • Fuel tank removal and replacement
  • Heater and water heater replacement
  • Interior or exterior alterations (exceptions those listed as "ordinary repairs")
  • Lawn irrigation systems
  • Re-roofing and Siding (except when it falls under "ordinary repairs")
  • Sheds over 100 square feet (Sheds under 100 square feet do require a zoning approval.)
  • Swimming Pools and Fences that serve as barriers for swimming pools

"Ordinary Repairs" that DO NOT Require Construction Permits:

  • Construction or replacement of sheds up to 100 square feet
  • Exterior or interior painting or wallpapering
  • Repair or replacement of any interior finish less than 25% of the wall area in any given room, including plastering or drywall
  • Repair or replacement of less than 25% of any exterior siding
  • Repair or replacement of kitchen cabinets (excluding additional electrical and plumbing work which would require permit and inspections)
  • Repair of any exterior porch which would not involve replacement of structural members
